Things continue to slowly return to normal. This past weekend Robin and her family found got out of the Embassy Suites in Baton Rouge. They moved into her sister’s trailer back in St. Bernard. We went to mass at Prom Succor in Chalmette Sunday morning. Although the drive was a little further, seeing people we knew made it all worth it. I regret now doing that sooner. My parents got their trailer as well. We don’t have electricity yet, but we have a generator that we use when we go there.
On January 29, Our Lady of Lourdes had a reunion at Mary Queen of Peace and we also got to see plenty of people. Everything that has been lost is depressing, but seeing everyone is the best way to boost people’s spirits. Our Knights of Columbus Council’s future is still uncertain. While we had a plenty of our members together at the parish reunion, our council still has yet to formally meet and discuss out future.
A congressional hearing has been taking place regarding the extremely crappy response to Hurricane Katrina. Mike Brown testified, and besides the fact he screwed up, said that being under the Department of Homeland Security made things difficult. Someone, not sure if it was Brown or not, said DHS was set up to deal with Terrorist Attacks and not Natrual Disasters. Besides there being people who didn’t know what the hell they were doing at every level of government, the fact is we were victims of big government. Some people like the big government programs (and higher taxes). Some people prefer smaller governemtn (and low taxes). Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if yo uare going to support these programs, you had better make sure they work. And FEMA did not work. And now they are kicking people out of hotels, leaving them homeless, and have promised these people trailers but still have not delivered. And I found out today there are trailers in Arkansas that have been sitting there and are starting to suffer damage for being stuck in mud for a long period of time. Here’s an article that tells it better than I can. http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/anderson.cooper.360/blog/2006/02/katrina-mobile-homes-immobile-in.html Every day I count my blessings that I have a roof over my head, a job providing income and health insurance. My final words on this for now: Bush is a Republican and Blanco is a Democrat. Had the parties been switched around, the results would have been similar.
I have not been tracking congress quite as much lately, but here is a bill for everyone to tell congress to vote no over:
HR 4694 – A campaing finance law that could eliminate third parties. The Official title is something like “Let the People Decide” but I’m not sure if you could get any more misleading than that. More info: http://www.freemarketnews.com/WorldNews.asp?nid=7441 Needless to say, Oppose this bill!
There have been riots by Muslims as a result of a cartoon making fun of Mohammed. If a cartoon was shown making fun of Jesus (which I am sure has been done already) Would Christians be rioting? I would be pissed off, but I would not go rioting. I’m not sure it would make a difference, but what if Islam had a Pope or Dhali Lama type figure? Would that help bring order to Islam? If Catholics started rioting, the Pope would be the first one trying to get everyone to settle down. I could not give perentages, but there are some Muslims that are acceptable of non-Muslims. I don’t go around making fun of non-Catholics, but I will definitely take my shots at any group that is Anti-Catholic. These violent Muslims need to realize they are not accomplishing anything.
John sent me this one. Who wants to make New Orleans a Chocolate City? http://www.myspace.com/mayor_ray_wonka
Until next time (whenever that is).
